All four apps in this comparison solve the same problem: a group spends money together and someone needs to keep score. They differ on price, friction, and how easily you can leave. We build one of them (Splitpond), so read the last column with that in mind — the other rows are as fair as we can make them.

Pick Splitwise if…

…your group already lives there, everyone has the app, and someone's willing to pay for Pro. It's the most mature product with the deepest feature set (currency conversion, itemization, integrations). The free tier, though, is deliberately hobbled — that's the business model.

Pick Tricount if…

…you're in Europe and want a polished free app with bank-transfer settle-up via bunq. It's genuinely free, though it's also a funnel into a bank's ecosystem, and getting data out is weaker than the others.

Pick Spliit if…

…you want open source and self-hostable. Spliit pioneered the "a group is a link" model we also use, it's free, and you can run it yourself. Development is community-paced, and receipt scanning is still experimental.

Pick Splitpond if…

…you're leaving Splitwise and want to keep your history (we're the only one with one-click CSV import), you want receipt scanning without a subscription, or you just want the unlimited-free promise in writing. We're the newest of the four and the most focused: split, balance, settle, scan — nothing else yet.
